Jones-McKenney graduated from Flint Northwestern High School in 1976. She was drafted by the St. Louis Streaks of The Women's Professional Basketball League (WBL) with the fourth overall pick in 1980. She also played five and a half seasons in Italy and was named the Italian league's Most Valuable Player three times while earning five All-Star nods but a knee injury shortened her career. In January 1985, she scored 84 points in a single game. She was the first female basketball player to ever play professionally from Flint. "By me being the pioneer of women's basketball (in the area) it's my obligation to come back to Flint and say, 'I'm giving back, I'm putting back,' and I think every athlete that has gone on out of Flint to play professional basketball should come back and do more than just a basketball camp."
